The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award is the world’s leading youth achievement programme, equipping young people for life in over 140 countries and territories across the globe. Open to young people aged 14 to 24, the Award is a personal challenge rather than a competition, encouraging participants to push their limits, set meaningful goals, and take ownership of their development.
For more than 60 years, the Award has inspired millions of young people to transform their lives. As a non-formal education framework, it plays a vital role in personal growth by promoting resilience, responsibility, and self-confidence. Participants design their own programme of activities, commit to achieving their goals, and are consistently recognised for their progress and accomplishments.
The Award is structured across three progressive levels, each consisting of four sections: Service, Physical Recreation, Skills, and Adventurous Journey. At every level, participants complete all four sections in order to achieve their Award. At Gold level, participants also undertake a Residential Project, where they broaden their experience in a new environment, collaborate with other young people, and build lasting relationships while contributing to a meaningful initiative.
Life at The British School, Alexandria is shaped by strong relationships between students, families, and staff. Small class sizes allow teachers to understand each learner’s strengths and aspirations, creating a setting where academic guidance and personal support go hand in hand. Respect, collaboration, and integrity form the foundation of daily school life.
Beyond academic achievement, students are encouraged to take responsibility, contribute positively to their surroundings, and develop confidence in their individual abilities. The sense of belonging within the school community plays a central role in helping young people grow into capable, thoughtful individuals prepared to contribute meaningfully to society.
